impact on natural disasters
Weathering and erosion can have a huge impact on natural disasters. When a hurricane hits the beach is a major barrier between the storm and the surrounding cities and towns. The more beach and sand there is to get in the path of the hurricane, the more the hurricane is worn down and the less damage it does to people's homes and businesses. Weathering and erosion impacts beaches by eroding away the sand and moving it to a different place causing there to be less beach for the hurricane to be blocked by. In order to help with erosion, many beaches have jetties and groins which help block the sand from being moved to a different location.

A peninsula called the Rockaways in New York is one beach that has been severely impacted by erosion. The beaches on the peninsula have barely any groins or jetties to stop erosion. The Rockaways have been hit by many hurricanes including Hurricane Irene and Hurricane Sandy. Since Rockaway Beach does not have much protection against erosion, the damages that Hurricane Sandy caused were a lot more severe than they would have been if the beach had more groins and jetties. A man named John Cori tried to tell the New York Government that something needed to be done in order to prevent more erosion on the beaches or when the next hurricane hit a lot more damage would be done. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and New York State’s Department of Environmental Conservation agreed to do a study on the beach to figure out where the best places would be for the groins and jetties. However, the study's funding was cut off and nothing was done; so when Hurricane Sandy hit Cori's prediction was confirmed. Because there was not enough sand built up to help prevent the waves from coming in to far, water from the hurricane flooded into the neighborhoods and businesses surrounding Rockaway Beach causing tons of damage. After Hurricane Sandy, John Cori began to work even harder to gain awareness and regain funding for Rockaway Beach. A documentary was created by a filmmaker named Dan Brown called "John Cori Warned You". In the documentary there are many interviews with John Cori and his partner Eddy Pastor, families who live in the Rockaways who were effected by Hurricane Sandy, and some government officials in New York. John Cori has also lead many events along with The Friends of Rockaway to help raise more awareness and give local families hope for future repairs of their neighborhoods and the beaches.
